    Fr. Joseph Jenkins

  • The blog header depicts an important and yet mis-understood New Testament scene, Jesus flogging the money-changers out of the temple. I selected it because the faith that gives us consolation can also make us very uncomfortable. Both Divine Mercy and Divine Justice meet in Jesus. Priests are ministers of reconciliation, but never at the cost of truth. In or out of season, we must be courageous in preaching and living out the Gospel of Life. The title of my blog is a play on words, not Flogger Priest but Blogger Priest.

Who is Father Joe?

Given that not everything is as it seems on the internet, a few people have asked if I am a real priest. I can assure readers that I am. I established the first parish web page in the Archdiocese of Washington in the 1990’s and have posted reflections on the faith on message boards and later on blogs. Indeed, when the Archdiocese began its own blog, a priest contacted me and said that I had inspired their effort. I try to be respectful to authority and faithful in transmitting Catholic truths. Pope Benedict XVI has commended priests to make the presence of the Church felt online. As for my credentials, I was ordained a priest in 1986 by the late Cardinal Hickey. I am currently the pastor of Holy Family Parish in Mitchellville, MD. The picture of me above was taken with my Ordinary, Cardinal Wuerl at a deanery meeting last year.

This blog is a personal effort, but always that of a Catholic priest in good standing. Hope this allays any fears or reservations. God bless!

  1. Reverend Joseph, I noticed the photo of you and Cardinal Wuerl. He was accused of child molestation. Why do you have the photo still up? I’m surprised that you didn’t have it removed.

FATHER JOE: Cardinal Wuerl has never been accused of such and you saying so is the sin of calumny. He was the one bishop who went to Rome insisting that an accused and treated priest not be returned to ministry after the Vatican insisted otherwise. He got in trouble for approving an extern priest for ministry in another diocese about whom his staff had not given him pertinent information. He was the new Ordinary. The Cardinal is currently retired and in good standing.

  2. Well, you’ve confirmed then that you are afraid to let anyone see my side of this conversation. Typical of the Catholic right wing – no wonder they’ve always been cozy with fascism. What a wimp!

FATHER JOE: Hector Cecil is banned from this site. However, lest anyone think I am unfair, above is one of his uncensored comments. Note his name-calling. He was one of the reasons why I abandoned my FATHER JOE Blog a few years back. I had tests for the heart and felt that the constant bombardment from such people was seriously hurting my health and peace of mind. In any case, all further comments from this person will be deleted. I would still ask others to pray for such men who are so filled with hate.
