    Fr. Joseph Jenkins

  • The blog header depicts an important and yet mis-understood New Testament scene, Jesus flogging the money-changers out of the temple. I selected it because the faith that gives us consolation can also make us very uncomfortable. Both Divine Mercy and Divine Justice meet in Jesus. Priests are ministers of reconciliation, but never at the cost of truth. In or out of season, we must be courageous in preaching and living out the Gospel of Life. The title of my blog is a play on words, not Flogger Priest but Blogger Priest.

Arguing with Picollo about Catholicism

This is the first of several posts in a rebuttal of an anti-Catholic on the faith.  Picollo is not particularly bright but his poison is no less deadly.

PICOLLO:

It is really very pertinent and worrisome that in this present 20th century the Catholics can still persistently oppose and contradict the facts in the Bible, claiming that the apostle Peter was the first pope and that Mary the mother of OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST remained a virgin after the birth of his first born son/child according to Matthew 2:24-26 and Luke 1:5-7.

FATHER JOE:

I would urge you to examine how your ignorance fuels your prejudice against Catholic teachings and practices. The claims of Catholicism are more impressive and clearly reasoned today than ever before. The preaching and teaching Church even preceded the canon of the Bible and the composition of New Testament Scriptures. I mention this because it is the surest evidence for the enduring value of Sacred Tradition. Your disavowal of such Tradition as a source for revelation betrays an entirely different methodology and starting point. This is why debates are so very difficult because fundamentalists and Catholic Christians are not even on the same page. Catholicism represents genuine and historical Christianity. Protestant fundamentalism is the manifestation of a modern aberration. Despite such problems, I will briefly respond to your hostile remarks, which constitute almost a kind of spam against this Blog.
